Stargazing at Longreach

One of Australia’s Darkest Skies

Longreach is blessed with exceptionally clear, dark skies. With minimal light pollution and wide open horizons, the night sky becomes a breathtaking display of stars, planets and galaxies. Step outside, let your eyes adjust, and look up.

Best Time to Look Up

After sunset to midnight is ideal.

For the most dramatic Milky Way views, 9:00 pm – 2:00 am is perfect.

Allow 10–15 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark.

What You’ll See

Autumn: Rising Milky Way, Southern Cross higher in the sky

Winter  Best: Milky Way overhead in stunning detail, crystal-clear skies

Spring: Shifting Milky Way, bright stars and planets

Summer: Warm nights, wide constellations, occasional meteor showers

Highlights

Milky Way • Southern Cross • Magellanic Clouds • Visible planets • Seasonal meteor showers

Finding Your Way

Look south for the Southern Cross — the Milky Way often appears as a soft glowing band across the sky.

The Outback Moment

Stargazing here isn’t just about the view — it’s about stillness, space and perspective. Sit back. Breathe. Let the universe do the rest.
